Lindale 4-H Club Events and News 09/21/2017

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend our kick-off meeting on Monday.  It was pretty crowded, but hopefully you were able to learn a little bit about 4-H and ask any questions you might have had.  If you still have questions, please feel free to email them to us at Lindale4HClub@aol.com, and we will try to find you an answer.  You can also contact our county extension agents, Sarah Bolt, sehindman@ag.tamu.edu, 903-590-2980  and Cheyenne Smith, cheyenne.smith@ag.tamu.edu, (903)590-2985.

Our weekly events list is typically not this long, but since this is our first for the 4-H year, we have a lot of information to share.

Registering for 4-H – To participate in 4-H contests, as well as practice any of the shooting sports such as rifle or archery, each child must be a registered member of 4-H year (4-H year follows the school year). If you register before 11/1/2017, the membership fee is $20. On 11/1/2017 and beyond, the fee goes up to $25. Go to https://texas.4honline.com/ to register your family. Adults who wish to volunteer should also join, and their dues are $10. For information on how to register, please visit this website: https://texas4-h.tamu.edu/wp-c…/uploads/WelcometoTexas4H.pdf

Top Shot Shooting Practice (Archery, Rifle, Pistol) – The first shooting practice will be Sunday, 9/24/17, from 3-5pm, at The Reload Ranch (11969 CR 313 E, Tyler).  Archery and Rifle Projects are going to have a joint practice on Sunday, 9/24/17, from 3-5pm at The Reload Ranch (11969 County Road 313 E, Tyler).  Please contact Coach Singler (lindale4hshooting@gmail.com) for rifle questions and Coach McMakin (smithcounty4harchery@gmail.com) for archery questions.  To attend the practice, each child must already be registered for the 2017/2018 4H year.  Due to liability requirements, all kids participating need to be in 3rd grade and above.

4-H Horse Project Meeting The first horse project meeting of the year will be Saturday, 10/7/17, from 9-11am, at the Sandy Point Equestrian Center (12812 CR 499, Lindale).  You do not need to have a horse to participate in the horse project.  Contact ldwhatley@gmail.com if you have any questions.

4-H Photography Project MeetingThe Photography Project will meet on Tuesday, 10/10/17 at 6:00 pm at the Renaissance Southpaw Art Studio (2808 S. Main St. Suite#D Lindale). Please contact Rebecca Helvey for further questions (renaissancesouthpaw@gmail.com).

4-H Sewing Project – At this time, any of our 4-H kids who are interested in sewing is invited to attend the weekly sewing classes lead by Carrellann Field at the Lindale Library, which are typically on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10-1 pm and 6-9 pm.  Please contact carrellannf@gmail.com to get on her email list as class times may vary each week (such as on the 3rd Monday of each month when we have our 4-H meeting there).

4-H One Day Community Service Project – Each year, 4-H clubs around Texas participate in a One-Day community service activity, which falls on 10/7/17 this year.  Our club has decided to volunteer at the Wesley House Assisted Living facility in Lindale, where we will play games and talk with the residents.  We are scheduled to be there at 3pm.   Please let us know if you are able to participate.

4-H YES Camp4-H YES Camp is an overnight fun filled camp for 3rd-8th grader.  It is October 20-21 at Pine Springs Baptist Camp in Laneville, TX. The fee is $60, but Smith County pays half the registration fee, so you would only pay $30 per child.  Please contact Sarah Bolt (sehindman@ag.tamu.edu) and Cheyenne Smith (cheyenne.smith@ag.tamu.edu) if you are interested in attending.  All registration paperwork is due by 10/6/17, though since the county is helping with registration; let them know as soon as possible.  Follow link for camp information and forms  https://d54-h.tamu.edu/2017-18-contests-events/2017-18-yes-camp/

Calf Scrambles – If you want to do Calf Scrambles please be sure to let Sarah Bolt (sehindman@ag.tamu.edu) and Cheyenne Smith (cheyenne.smith@ag.tamu.edu) know so they can get you paperwork. Sarah will be doing all Austin Calf Scramble entries on Oct 1st.

East Texas State Fair Contests – If you are participating in the East Texas State Fair as 4-H, and you need Sarah’s signature on the eligibility form, please email Cheyenne Cheyenne.Smith@ag.tamu.edu

Lindale 4-H Club Meeting – Our next Lindale 4-H Club meeting will be held Monday, 10/16/17, at 6:30 pm at the Lindale Library.

Clover Kids Program – At our meeting, we had a lot of interest in the clover kid program.  We are looking for volunteers who might be interested in getting this program started up, and setting up a monthly workshop geared towards their age group related to pets, plants, cooking, crafts, etc.  Bell County has set up a good parent guide for their clover kids program, which might be adapted to work for the Smith County/Lindale clover kids – https://agrilife.org/bell4h/files/2010/07/Clover-Kids-Parent-Guide.pdf.  Please reply to our club email if you are interested in volunteering with this clover kids program.

Those interested in joining the Photography Project, mark down Thursday, November 17th, 6:30pm on your calendar. This will be our first project meeting. We will discuss some of the cool functions of our camera and how to become better photographers. We also hope to discuss some of the Scavenger Hunt photos that many of you submitted. If you didn’t get around to loading up your pictures you still can. FB message us if you need that information. Meeting will be held near the Tyler Pounds Airport at the LifePoint Fellowship church. Open to all Smith County 4-H Club members. Spread the word.

Photography Scavenger Hunt

photography-scavenger-huntHave your child look over the rules and let them have fun exploring for these items.  I know some of you might not have a FANCY camera.  You DO NOT have to. That is the biggest misconception in photography. While that certainly may help, it is truly about the creativity of the person behind the camera.  There are unique gallery shows filled with photography art taken by cell phone cameras ;>).  The Scavenger Hunt explains how the perspective of the photographer can make the photo truly interesting.
I have created an Internet Web Gallery for our Lindale Photography Project.  My vision is that your children can upload their Scavenger Hunt pictures to this Shared Gallery. That in itself may be a foreign concept to you. If so, we can talk about that at one of our meetings.  I would love to see your child’s work and have everyone be inspired and share their thoughts of encouragement to one another.  This is also a great way for us to be ready and prepared when it comes time to enter our photography in a contest, fair, and 4-H State Round Up event.  As well as to have photos available when it comes time to put together our Record Books at the end of the year.  We will be ahead of the game :>)

Let’s set a deadline of October 15th to have Scavenger Hunt photos uploaded to gallery.
This gallery also has the options to edit and apply filters (that is a photography word–but means change the tints/hues, lighten, darken etc.) to the photograph to make it more artistic and appealing to the eye. Once the image is uploaded to the gallery, your child can then edit and play around with the colors and brightness… make sure they “Save” the changes.  Again, if this is all new to you and you don’t know how to walk your child through this, let me know.
Please contact the club through our website, Facebook page or Lindale4h@aolcom for access to this Shared Link.  Once you receive it, be sure your child gives a title to the photo as to what Scavenger category it falls under.
Looking forward to meeting you all and having an awesome Photography team!  I am hoping that I can assign photographers to photograph our Club meetings, to upload pics to our Facebook page for promotion purposes.  And, to have on site photographers taking pictures at various 4-H events to publicize our club in the community.
